There is an old saying that goes, "If you sail on San Francisco bay, you can sail anywhere." Well, my brother Scott and I managed to sail around the bay, out under the Golden Gate and back again without much wind. I think that makes us very good sailors! Going out was easy as the tide was also going out, but coming back was a bit more challenging. We tried sailing back under the bridge, but couldn't keep up with the outgoing tide. By this time we had a good wind to our back, were crashing through 4-6 foot waves, making about 6 knots, but were actually going backwards and a bit sidewards. Finally, we had to turn the motor on before the current took us to Honolulu. Even with the assistance of the motor, it took us nearly two hours to go about 6 miles! Once back in the lee of Marin, the wind kicked up and we turned the motor off and sailed back to the berth.

It sounds like a lot of fun and i'm glad that you got to stay the extra time so that you could go sailing!
Wish I was invited. I need some grown-up sailing time.
As I remember it ... we crashed through 10 to 12 foot swells in 30 plus knots of wind battling our way back to the protected harbor through heavy rains ...
